Bloggers’ Quilt Festival ~ Spring 2011

This is that fabulous time of year, I get so excited, I can hardly stand it.   Tied to the computer, inspired, uplifted, ideas swirling faster than my brain can handle.  It’s Bloggers’ Quilt Festival Week!  Where bloggers share a quilt that they’d like to share!  It’s such fun to look at all the fabulous quilts being made all around the world.  Very much a camaraderie of creative people!

My quilt starts about this time last year.  My husband and I took a trip to Italy and while in Venice we toured St. Mark’s Basilica.  I was so looking forward to this Cathedral, in particular, because I had heard such wonderful things about all the mosaic work.  I have always been drawn to mosaics, those tiny little pieces, of whatever material the artist chooses, all put together to create something larger.  Hmm…  Kind of like quilting…. Wouldn’t you say?

May 11, 2010, in front of St. Mark’s Cathedral, Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy.

We visited here, twice this trip.  The first time we only had a pocket camera and didn’t bother with many pictures because the basilica is so large.  The second visit, we had the better camera but also enjoyed clouds and threatening rain…  What’s a girl to do?  You can’t carry everything, all the time, and still expect to have fun….

It’s huge!  This is just a portion.

And because cameras are not allowed inside, I don’t believe there are any pictures of the interior. The mosaics just bumped one up against another, everywhere.  One old quilt pattern smushed right up against another.  So many patterns we’ve seen before.  You have to go and see it, for yourself, to believe it.  This is where many of our old, original, quilt patterns came from, I am sure of it!

So that is how I came to be inspired to make this quilt.

Mosaic Tiles quilt by Sewfrench“Mosaic Tiles”
inspired by the floors of St. Marks Basilica, Venice, Italy
king size
machine pieced
hand quilted by Sewfrench

This started as a scrapbuster lap quilt and kept growing with the more love I felt.  And I felt a lot of emotion making this one…..  I used Stonehenge by Northcott for quite a bit of the fabric, raiding my stash for anything that could be imagined to look like a type of stone. The dark triangles in each is a dark purple, because it is what I had.  And because this was originally going to be a lap quilt, the stash of purple came up a tad bit short and a few had to be pieced.  I’m not sure why I even considered worrying about that…..  The perfectionist in me, I suppose…  Each block is 9″ square and it finished as an oversized queen.  Cotton batting and hand quilted.

Mosaic Tiles quilt by SewfrenchAnd the back, a quilt in it’s own right, with a strip of blocks set off center.  They are actually down the center.  It was too long to hold in the other direction.  This quilt is now owned by my mosaic creating, rock loving, quilt snuggling, older sister.  She was the luck of the draw this Christmas!  And if she ever decides she’s finished with it, there are strings attached.  Or threads, shall I say.  You read it here.

Now, we sisters just need to go see the inspiration, in person, together.

Don’t you think???

There’s a fungus among us…

Fungi are so incredibly cool.

So many colors.

So many shapes.

So much texture.

Always another surprise just around the corner.

Can you believe the variety on just a small portion of our property?

And it’s always a family affair.

But the big question….  Just *when* will the favored variety pop?

The ever elusive morel mushroom.

TODAY!!!  That’s when!

Today they popped somewhere between 7am and 11am, they did their thing, in their own time! We’ve been searching three times per day, for the past week, with no luck…

Perseverance has finally paid off!!

We have had the +40° at night, +60° during the day.  Now add in extra sunshine and warmth after the 2 inches of rain yesterday and…  Bingo!!

And yes, we found them. They are here. They are just now starting to pop.  Can’t wait to bring them in by the pound.

Now… what shall we do with them???

Bring it on, summer!

Having the Pollo- pescatarian daughter home, from college, has stirred up some delicious new favorites!

With graduation in the rear view, we’ve been really busy getting her moved back home. Lots of packing, unpacking, running, doing stairs, organizing and donating.  Cleaning out and starting over.  Once college was finished, it seems it was much easier, for her, to get rid of *lots*.  After all that, I am just happy that our friendly trash man is still friendly!

We have really been enjoying cooking and eating lots of nourishing foods.  Bringing back the old and trying new recipes.

Orange, Ginger, Butternut Squash Soup topped with orange zest and spicy pepitos is a definite repeatable dish.

Curried Swiss Chard in a Coconut *milk* was divine!

Both recipes are variations from this fabulous cookbook, Color Me Vegan, making eating all varietiations, of color, so much easier.

We’ve spent the evenings watching a fabulous miniseries.  Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth, have you seen it?  The book is 1000+ pages and worth every minute.  The mini series is wonderfully done, too.  A must see.  Really enjoyed how it brings life, in the 1100’s, alive.  Things really haven’t changed all that much…

After slaving for a week we topped it off with a late graduation/early Mother’s Day Spa Day.

Started with brunch at Sundance Grill, 28th Street.  Twice in one week, you know it must be good!  And as always, it was great!  We are trying to work our way through the menu, but *some* people keep getting hung up on the same asparagus/mushroom/hollandaise omelet dish, others like to try new things, LOL!

Pomegranate Mimosa and a spicy BLT Bloody Mary for starters! It's really nice that the restaurant and spa share the same parking lot!

Design1 has the best cucumber water around!

And the finished products.

Good times, Good times….

*Now* we are ready for summer!

Bring it on!

Some things never change….

Thank Goodness.

The Gold Standard by which all Hot and Sour soups are compared……

Yellow Curry, no mushrooms, extra onions, and can you make that extra spicy, please?

Yellowfin tuna……

Red Dragon Sushi Rolls….  and yes that is Sriracha sauce, if you needed to ask….

Fusion has never let us down and I’m sure they never will………..

And for dessert….  Another stop.  Just up the road.  It’s worth it.  I promise.

Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate

Now to decide which one is best with red wine???

Drumroll please………Today’s winner is….
The Pecante’ Bar
Dark chocolate with a crunchy dense layer of pecans, cocoa nibs, thyme, arbole chili, and sea salt – a concoction caramelized in local maple syrup.

Sustainable goodness, highly recommended.

Oh yeah…..

And sustainability never tasted so good…..  Call Mimi, she can fix *you* up, too!

I ♥ Mimi…….

Has spring sprung where you live?

It appears to be a ways off, here at the cottage.  It’s still very cold and gray.  The lake still has the look of winter about it.  Snow drifts here and there, very few neighbors about their properties, shrubbery still wrapped in burlap, many restaurants and shops with no sign of life.  Seasonal living is alive and well in Northern Michigan…..

At least, I hope, it is yet some ways off.  There is *so* much work to do….

Peter and I came up on Thursday, after a recent drop of 10″ of snow….  Most of ours was melted, by the time we got here.  Just little piles here and there, under the trees.

We haven’t been here since October, when Peter was preparing to have knee surgery.  I believe this is the longest period of time that we have ever been away…

The dust bunnies appeared to have settled in nicely, but no other critters, thank goodness….

It appears we faired pretty well this winter. Yes, the canoe and kayak blew off their rack and the weather vane was ripped from it’s metal fitting….

No ice heave to the permanent dock section, this year.  That’s good.  But the deck needs sealed this year…  And the sun damage to the back of the house is now noticeable.  I do believe some painting will be happening out there as soon as it is warm enough.

The neighbor’s tree that came down on the hot tub, appeared to do no damage.  That’s a good thing.

The dock will need to be put in soon….

The deck irrigation still needs tested, to make sure it is still in good working order….

Lots of planters will need to be prepared for all the vegetable seeds, that finally arrived, after a winter of oogling over catalogs….

The little pond out front needs emptied, scrubbed and replanted this year.  Need new bark out there….  Looks like the daisies never got cut back……  Lots of limbs and pine cones to be picked up, once it dries up a bit more……

And yes, some tree doctoring needs to happen…..  It would appear someone tried to take out a couple of our front trees……  I suspect they weren’t injured but I hope the bottom side of their car had as much damage, from our landscape rocks, as their front end did from my cedar trees….  Can you believe some people???  Car parts strown everywhere.  You would think they may have wanted to keep their ripped out, but unbroken, headlight for spotlighting, or some such nonsense…..  Jeesh….

It could be worse.  Way worse.  Snow shoveling is one thing.  Snow will eventually melt if you can ignore it long enough.

Sand will not.

This may be public property, but the sand is up to the bottom of the trail bench.  Some one has to remove it and redeposit it on the beach.

This is not public property.

These poor people no longer have a yard or sidewalk or driveway or garage access….  I’m not sure when or what happened, but I bet they don’t like sand as much as they once did…..  It’s bad enough cleaning up tracked in sand, during the summer months.  But year round???  I wonder if the city would buy it for a fair price?????

On a brighter note, even though it was really chilly, I was able to get out and do 5.5 morning miles.  Love it when the traffic is so light, the fudgies have yet to arrive and the locals drive 65 in a 45……  Okay, you can’t have everything…..  But at least the traffic is light :/

The rhubarb is coming up nicely, even if the unruliness of the Horsetail (Equisetaceae)
has already started taking over across the street…

And even the unplanned Easter lilies are trying to do their thing!

Hopefully tomorrow will be dry and warm enough to get some major yard work started.  And maybe take a little morel hunting hike….

At least, for now, the dust bunnies have been kicked to the curb.  And their is hope on the horizon!

So, has spring sprung where you live???

Bring it on baby.  I can hardly wait!!!  Work and all!

Happy Adoption Day, Cutie Patooties!

When I really started to get into quilting and started having nieces and nephews pop out right and left, I decided I would make them each a baby quilt, when they were born.  Of course, there were already 9 (?) born, before I actually implemented this tradition…..  Sometime shortly after 1990 is when I started???  I’m thinking Heather, Christina, Jess, Jenn, Krystal, Paul, Matt, Sam, and Amy missed the baby quilts.  So, those ended up getting either a graduation, wedding, take to college, or nap quilt.  Did I miss anyone else???  Let’s hope not!

I *thought* I was finally caught up when it occurred to me that I had a great-niece and a nephew that I had *totally* missed.  You see they are very special children.  They were especially, hand-picked to start the family of my niece and her husband.

So, when I was in the planning stages of these most recently, completed, projects, Ari and Andrew popped into my head!  NO!!!  I can NOT believe I missed them!  They have celebrated their adoption anniversary 4 times and I still missed them??  Just because I didn’t have the 9 months to plan, create, cut and stitch is no excuse for not getting a special project out just for the two of them….  I am ashamed…….  I feel badly.  I’m not sure if they noticed the oversight, or not, even as I gifted their new baby sister a quilt, *3* years ago….  I am so sorry, if they did.  And I surely to heck hope their parents didn’t notice, because if they did, they should have mentioned the slight.  It would have only been right.  Jeesh….

So for Adoption Anniversary #4 on April 3, Andrew and Ari received these, in the mail.

And this is the picture of their excitement.

The front of Ari’s quilt.

And the back.

The front of Andrew’s quilt.

And the back.

I hope that they forgive me for being 4 years late. And I can’t blame it on “hand quilting takes longer”, though they are completely hand quilted.  And Kona front AND back makes for some extra tough, and slow going, quilting. They should just they know that they got lots and lots more love stitched up in every single hand-stitched stitch, that any other quilt I’ve gifted.  These are 60″ x 60″ quilts with plenty of room for snugs, for years and years to come!

As an aside, I do not know the pattern.  But I do know I used the following Kona Cotton Solids.  Andrew’s is Lemon, Cheddar, Papaya, Amber, School Bus, Orange, Coral, Tomato, Red, and Rich Red.  Ari’s is Raisin, Eggplant, Mulberry, Dk. Violet, Cerise, Pomegrante, Rich Red, Red, Tomato, and Coral.  The blocks themselves finish out at 6″. Just in case you needed to know.  LOL!

Now to get some pictures of them all snugged up in them!  Hope you two are enjoying them!

I Know, I Know, I Know…….

I’ve been really busy.  I do plan on coming back here.  Hopefully, within the week.  Please don’t give up on me..  LOL!

Many things going on, many at one time, but the one thing that has remained constant in my life for almost 10 years….  T-Tapp.  The T-Tapp forums.  My T-Tapp friends and family.

My life would not be the same if I hadn’t been out looking for a workout video to replace the old Buns of Steel, 10 years ago……..  Thank you, Teresa!  And besides, you are way cuter and totally more effective than Greg ever dreamt of being!

So for now I will just share this link and let you mull over just why I adore Teresa and her expertise…..

Happy Birthday, Spencer!

I can not believe how the years are flying by.

Seems like just yesterday you were diving into Crystal Lake in your clothes……

And now look at you, practically all grown up.  So smart and nice.  Handsome and cool. Thoughtful and considerate.  Such a great kid.  We’re so proud of you!

Do you believe in fortune cookies???

So, Peter’s a sushi freak, right?  You knew that….

Well, I am a hot and sour soup freak.  I love spicy.  I love vinegary.  I love Shang Hai Ichiban.  Especially their Hot and Sour Soup.  It is the best of all we’ve ever had.  Ever.  Well, okay maybe the Fusion is on par, but, unfortunately, we haven’t been in that part of the woods, lately.

Oh, my goodness, this is tasty stuff!

And sushi!  They now have a dedicated sushi bar and sushi chef, who is awesome!  Simple and even not so simple delicacies, and, delicious, and oh so fresh!

And they now have new lunch specials, daily.  This was their Firecracker shrimp.  The waitress, who hardly speaks English, kept saying, “You like hot, you like hot???”!  “Yes, hot is good, I like hot!”  It was perfect!  Oh, it was good!  We will be making this sometime soon.  I keep saying that, but I think we need to keep trying other versions.  Just to be sure…..

I read something, today, that claimed eating spicy food, regularly, can boost your metabolism, to lose something like, an additional, 10 pounds per month.  Crazy, seriously…..  If that were true, there would be nothing left, of me, but I’m game.  I can put away some spicy food.

And besides emaciation is attractive, right????

Anyway……….  I was just wondering…

Seems as if every time we go anywhere there are fortune cookies being served, someone else gets mine.  Always.  “I got yours”  “You got mine.”  “Who’s did you get?”  That’s not just me, is it?  Tell me it happens to you, too?

The best part about this restaurant?  It doesn’t matter who gets whose, because, the fortune cookie never lies!

Never, ever lie. I swear, they don't. Ever.

A new totin’ bag!

That’s what we, (I say loosely), call it in the South………

Always somethin’ to tote.

I recently noticed that, almost, everyone, except me, has one of my bags.  Or so it seems……

So tada!  I spotted this Michelle D’Amore for Benartex fabric line at one of my favorite local shops.  The line is called Hab-i-tat (a philosophy…a refuge), I love the name, it spoke to me.  Am I weird, do color names and fabric lines, speak to you?  Or is that just me?  And I am in *love* with the fabric!!   I thought how fun, yeah right, it would be to practice my machine quilting around all the big flowers.  It worked.  Sort of…..  Not nearly as neat as this T4, A type personality, would have liked, but I’m okay with it.  It’s artistic…  And besides I needed it!  The practice and the bag.  Seriously.

Dang, my hands look old... I need a manicure and hand treatment!

This will be my car bag.  It has an interior zippered pocket and lots of pouches.  I’m always the navigator, or nagivator, depends on who’s doing the name calling…. the planner, the read aloud passenger, and snack provider….  My feet are drowning in maps, books, CDs, newspapers, water bottles and snacks…..  Now, it will be contained in something I’m not embarrassed to be seen, in public, with.  Not that I’m embarrassed by Walmart shopping bags…..  But, you know…….

Now I need a road trip…..

Thanks, Amanda, for the photography!!
